Debrecen
Discover Debrecen - The Heart of Eastern Hungary
Debrecen is the traditional economic, cultural, and intellectual center of Eastern Hungary. With a rich historical heritage, the city rose to prominence in the 16th century as the stronghold of the Reformed Church in Hungary, earning it the title "Calvinist Rome."
The 17th century marked a golden age for Debrecen, as it became a key mediator between the three major political regions of the time: Ottoman-occupied Hungary, the Kingdom of Hungary, and the Principality of Transylvania. It even served briefly as the capital of Hungary on two occasions.
Today, Debrecen is Hungary’s second-largest city, home to around 250,000 residents. Despite having no rivers or mountains, its natural surroundings are remarkable. Just outside the city lies the Hortobágy National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “puszta” — the quintessential Hungarian Plain, famous for:
- Its flat, open landscapes,
- Unique flora and fauna, especially bird species,
- Natural phenomena like Fata Morgana,
- And ancient animal husbandry traditions preserved for centuries.
Debrecen also offers a serene and relaxing atmosphere, particularly in its most beloved area — the Great Forest (Nagyerdő). Known as a holiday and wellness resort, this part of the city features:
- Majestic woodlands
- Elegant thermal baths and spas
- Numerous cultural venues and tourist attractions
- And the main campus of the University of Debrecen
