About the University of Debrecen

Academics

The roots of higher education in Debrecen trace back to the 16th century, when the city established the Calvinist College of Debrecen in 1538. This institution quickly became a major cultural and intellectual center in Hungary, educating numerous renowned writers, scientists, and politicians.

By the 18th century, the College had expanded to include Law and Theology faculties. While no dedicated medical faculty existed at the time, physicians were trained within the college, laying the foundation for what would eventually become a renowned medical education tradition.

The University of Debrecen’s Medical School carries this historical legacy forward. It is recognized as Central Europe’s first campus-based medical school, reflecting both tradition and innovation.

Institutions

In 1896, during Hungary’s millennium celebrations, the decision was made to establish a modern university in Debrecen. This dream became a reality when the University of Debrecen was officially inaugurated on October 23, 1918, with four founding faculties:

  • Arts
  • Science
  • Theology
  • Medicine

In 1951, the Faculty of Medicine became an independent University Medical School, operating under the supervision of the Hungarian Ministry of Health.

Today, the University of Debrecen stands as one of Hungary’s leading institutions, blending centuries of academic tradition with cutting-edge research and a commitment to international education.
